If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to create a viral buzz for your company, you can’t ignore the benefits of sticker marketing.

A few weeks ago, we were talking with a client who shared a memory he had from high school. A new kid had just moved to town after his parents decided to open a surf/snowboard shop in the local shopping corridor. One day, the new kid showed up with a pile of happy face stickers (the happy face was the same one his parents used for the shop’s logo.)

One by one, he began to distribute them to his friends and classmates. By the end of the day, everyone who didn’t have a sticker wanted to know how they could get their hands on one.

Suffice to say, those stickers provided some great marketing for his parents’ business.

Guerrilla marketing 101

If you’re going to print stickers for your business, we don’t recommend having your employees go around and start slapping them on light poles or utility boxes for all of the obvious reasons.

We would, however, recommend that you give them out in grab-bags or at conventions. You can even give a stack to each of your employees and ask them to leave a sticker alongside their tip when they eat out at restaurants.

You can also ask local coffee shops if you can stack some stickers alongside the free magazines they have on that shelf in the corner of the sitting room.

The days of the bumper sticker are long gone

Yes, people still put stickers on the bumpers of their cars, but today you’ll find promo stickers affixed to everything from windows to water bottles to laptops.

One of our favorites “spotted here” sticker stories relates to an older, balding man who regularly appears as a commentator on one of the cable news networks. While an older, balding man on a news station isn’t especially noteworthy, the fact that this guy has a Wu Tang Clan sticker on his personal laptop (which sits in front of him every time he’s doing a segment), well, that’s just hilarious.
