When most people think of promotional products they think of the “greatest hits” of years past.  In the old days, pens, t-shirts and coffee mugs were the golden standard. Today, if you can dream it, you can likely print your logo on it.

If you’re looking for a way to increase your brand’s awareness without breaking the bank,a well thought out promo product may be the solution you’re looking for.

It’s all about the branding

A few years ago we had an interesting conversation with a man who owned a bail bonds business. He was telling us about some of the success he’s had with promo products, and the one that stuck out most was a key chain that looked like a tiny set of handcuffs. His company became famous for that item.

As time went on, when they’d go to trade shows and conferences, more and more people would arrive at the table to ask if this was the place to get the handcuffs. It was a simple, innovative product that people talked about and held onto. The fact that the key chain turned into a conversation piece didn’t hurt, either.

People hold onto promo products

A recent statistic showed that 80 percent of consumers has between 1 and 10 promo products. For some, this means holding onto the oversized t-shirt they picked up at a trade show, because it doubles as a sleep shirt. For others, it’s about the 35different pens they have in their office desk drawer. Sure, some are of the standard office-issue BIC variety, but the rest are adorned with logos. Coffee mugs are still a popular choice, but you can also get creative. Mouse pads, wine openers, chap stick and money clips are also popular options.

Bags, belt buckles, travel coffee mugs and water bottles are also good choices. If you’re thinking about adding stickers to your line up, you’ll want to read our past blog about how a sticker marketing campaign can help you launch a new product.

Again, it’s about longevity

If you’re going to invest in promo products you’ll want to choose items that people will hold onto.  A pack of gum, or candies printed with your company logo on the wrapper, are poor choices. Once they’re used, whatever has your logo on it is going to wind up in the trash.

Lip balm, on the other hand, that’s something that gets stashed in a drawer or in a purse. You’ll also want to make sure you choose a high-quality printer. If your logo gets wiped off your pens easily, or it gets stripped off your coffee mugs once they run through the dish washer, you won’t be doing yourself any favors.
